Gender identity of the transgender people have been recognized legally in Turkey since late 80's after having full transition operation and gender change operations have been performed for decades. They can get married and have completely equal rights after obtaining legal approval. You should've known this already if you have lived in Istanbul for a year. There may be LGBT-phobic cases in Turkey as it would be anywhere else in the world. All you need to do is to know your rights and fight for it when necessary. Germany can be more protective about discriminations against LGBT individuals but we read much more transphobic news from the USA compared to Turkey, actually.
